This page explains what this site collects, why, and what you can do about it. It covers the pages published on this domain, not the sites we link to.

What we collect

How the page is read. We record which article you landed on, whether the page stayed open for more than three seconds, how far down it you scrolled, which sections came into view, and which link you clicked. This is stored against a campaign click identifier, not against your name or your email address.

Technical basics. Your browser sends a user agent string and an approximate country with every request. We store whether the visit was on a phone or a desktop, and the country. We do not store your IP address.

Advertising identifiers. When you arrive from an advertisement, the link carries an identifier from the advertising platform. We keep it so that we can tell which advertisement brought you here and whether it was worth running.

Why

To find out which articles are useful and which advertisements are worth paying for. That is the whole purpose. We do not build profiles of individual readers and we do not sell anything about you to anyone.

Third parties on this page

Taboola, an advertising platform, receives a page view and a click signal so it can measure the advertisements it delivered. If we later advertise on Google or Microsoft, their measurement tags will appear here on the same basis, and this page will say so before they do.

The location shown in the bar at the top of an article is looked up through ipwho.is from your connection. It is used only to write the name of a city on the page and is not stored.

When you click through to a seller

Once you follow a link to a product, you are on that company's website and their privacy policy applies, not ours. We pass along the campaign identifier so the seller can credit the sale to us. We do not receive your name, your address or your payment details.

How long we keep it

Reading and click data is kept for as long as the campaign it belongs to is being evaluated, and is deleted when it is no longer useful.

Your choices

Blocking scripts in your browser stops the measurement described above; the articles still work. To ask what is held against a campaign identifier, or to have it deleted, write to [email protected] and include the full address of the page you arrived on.
